Gardening Club Success Story: Part 1
The gardeners of Gardening Club have had great success in their designing, planting, and creating of Washington's first garden. It looks terrific and will carry us until Spring. Enjoy some photos of the momemnts we had while gardening together! Fun Stuff.
School Gardening: An Afterschool Program in the Making
With our Yes We Can Projects, we will be kicking off the school gardening project by planting a tree to honor our school, our President's call to action rather than only reaction, and our desire to address global warming and pollution in our own backyards! The big event will kickoff on the final Friday in May. We cannot wait to plant our tree and seal our project with a kiss of dirt. Yum!
While we enjoy the growth of our tree over the summer, the teachers will be getting ready to create a School Garden to surround our first planting. Look over the Chicago Botanic Garen site by clicking on the flowers to the right for inspiration and explanation. Enjoy!
After School Program Session 1: Getting Started
We will have to start by thinking first about another type of green- money. It will be our job to host one or two fundraising events where we collect cash for the purchase of plants, tools, planter boxes, and gravel. We'll brainstorm ideas, choose a few, and get the ball rolling. Near the end of Session 1, we will purchase bulbs to add to the planting done by Student Council last year. We will also work to submit a written proposal to DonarsChoose.org to solicit corporations for funds.
After School Program Session 2: Designing and Ordering
During this session, we will begin building our Cedar Planters and designing the perrenial, aromotherapy, and edible gardens. We will create a design for each bed and order the plants for arrival in the spring. Some suggestions include and deserve research include:
- Bearded Iris (2)
- Butterfly Bushes
- Columbines (3)
- Coreopsis
- Daylilies
- Garden Mums (2)
- Orange Coneflowers
- Peony
- Phlox (3)

After School Session 3: Planting the Garden
This is the obvious part. We will set our beds, lay the gravel, plant the containers, and plant the seeds, bulbs, and plants. Get ready to get full of dirt and work those muscles. All are welcome and parent volunteers would be especially fun!
